Driving 55 Saves More Than Lives
Posted by Debo Hobo under: Travel-General .
If you are heading out on a road trip read this post first. If you want to save money on gas that is.
It is no secret the only way to save money on gas is to use less gas. We are burning through gas in America as though it were a local commodity. Well it isn’t, anymore. Although we are accustomed to living life in the fast lane, speeding down the highway in sports cars and poorly engineered pseudo aerodynamic SUVs we are blowing through billions, no trillions of dollars.
If the national speed limit was reset to 55 MPH we could save 1 billion barrels of oil per year, which by the way is more than the U.S. imports from the Persian Gulf.
Tip to help conserve your gas:
*Combine trips
*Try to avoid rush hour because of the stop and go nature of traffic.
*Stop flooring the gas pedal. It can waste gas, so drive less aggressively.
*Keep your tires properly inflated and keep you car tuned up.
*Slowing down to save gas…. it’s doable

I remember back when I first heard the idea of drilling in the Alaska wildlife refuge. It was George W. Bush making it clear that the American people would not need to change their energy usage habits - there would be more oil found somewhere.
Would it be that bad to come out and say that perhaps we should make a real effort to cut down on energy usage? Your post is a great example of an easy step that everyone should be able to do.
Lewis thank you for your omment. As always you have hit the nail on the head. Conservation begins at home in the driveway. From sorting the trash to deciding to let up on the gas pedal. If we were able to drive at 55 in the 70s and 80s why can’t we do it now in the 00s?
We are such a “I need it now!” society that we would rather waste resources for immediate gratification.
