Global Vision Awards 2007

Posted by Debo Hobo under: Green Matters .

An airline maverick and others are honored for their work to maintain the world’s vibrancy and variety.

branson.jpgThe Global Vision Awards winner in the catagory of “Corporate Initiative” is Virgin founder and president Richard Branson. The British mogul’s recent efforts to reshape the aviation industry make it clear that he understands the magnitude of the carbon-emissions issue.

In 2006, in a groundbreaking gesture, Branson committed all of his airline profits over the next decade—roughly $3 billion—to the development of nonfossil fuels. Next year, Virgin plans to launch the world’s first clean-fuel commercial flight.

For years, the commercial airline industry avoided public scrutiny of its contribution to global warming. But thanks in large part to Virgin Atlantic Airways, its days of flying under the radar are over.

Global Vision Awards were formed by Travel + Leisure. Their editors and writters search the world over for projects that are transforming the way we approach culture, community, and the natural world. The nominies are voted on by a panel of estemed judges from fields such as Spanish historian, Founder of the Slow Food movement, Lead scientist with the Nature Conservancy and others.
