US Museums Re-Invent Themselves

The New New Museum in New York

What does it take for a not-so-big museum in the cultural mecca of Manhattan to make headlines? For the new New Museum of Contemporary Art, a near-doubling of exhibit space, a singular architectural design, and a multidimensional inaugural exhibit eventually encompassing all of the Sanaa-designed building’s galleries should do the trick.

Since its founding in 1977, the New Museum, New York City’s preeminent museum of contemporary art, has showcased the works of major artists from sculptor Claes Oldenberg to photographer Cindy Sherman.

To celebrate its move from Soho to the Bowery, the New Museum launches an inaugural show entitled “Unmonumental” in four phases: sculpture, collage and photomontage, audio environment, and online.

The new New Museum opened its galleries on Dec. 1, 2007.

Currier Museum of Art Retools in Manchester, N.H.

Manchester, the largest city in New Hampshire and a growing bedroom community to Boston, will get a boost to its cultural portfolio when the Currier Museum of Art reopens its doors in April 2008 after two years of building and rebuilding.

courrier.gif The Currier, which specializes in both regional artists and in European and American paintings, photographs, sculptures and decorative art, will boast 33,000 additional feet of gallery space as well as a winter garden and a more commodious entrance and ground floor facilities.

The Currier also owns and operates Zimmerman House, the only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home in New England that’s open to the public.
