McCain calls for a summer ‘gas-tax holiday’

There may be some relief insight from the high gas prices this summer after all. We are still in the debating process as to whether we are going to fly or drive out to San Diego for my son’s wedding. If the price of gas drops by at least .20c we just well may be driving.
John McCain called Tuesday for the federal government to free people from paying gasoline taxes this summer and ensure that college students can secure loans this fall, proposals aimed at stemming the public’s pain now from the troubled economy.
In the longer-term, the certain Republican presidential nominee said he would double the tax exemption for dependent children and offer people the option of choosing a simpler tax system.
“We know from experience that no serious reform of the current tax code will come out of Congress, so now it is time to turn the decision over to the people,” McCain said in a sweeping economic speech at Carnegie Mellon University a week before Pennsylvania’s primaries.
To help people weather the downturn immediately, McCain urged Congress to institute a “gas-tax holiday” by suspending the 18.4 cent federal gas tax and 24.4 cent diesel tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day. He also renewed his call for the United States to stop adding to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and thus lessen to some extent the worldwide demand for oil. Read more…

Hi Debo! Been a long time, but I’ve been lurking via RSS.
Yeah, why not cut more taxes and give out checks that are essentially worthless while printing more money and taking out loans from every foreign country on the planet.
I can go on, but man this is out of control. And I say this without endorsing any candidate or party. I’m willing to vote for anyone who doesn’t have their head in their…well, you know. ![]()

Although John McCain has said he lacks economic expertise
This line says it all right here. I’m sorry, but $0.20 is nothing I can really get happy about. I can find that on the street! Keep the tax on gas, eliminate the subsidies and quadruple the windfall profits tax levied on the oil companies. Take the money and invest in mas transit for the major cities suffering from gridlock now. If we did this today, by 2012 there should be a difference.
LOL, but this would only happen if we had people who wanted to solved problems and not play politics. Besides, will John McCain live long enough to see the results of any of his changes/reforms ? ![]()
