American Airlines Unbundled and a la Carte

October 9, 2008 by: Debo Hobo

American Airline will be moving forward with plans to move to unbundled ticket pricing. This means the consumer will pay a base price and then select from a menu their amenities.

I like this idea, we already know how to make your flights more comfortable. Besides I don’t think it’s practical to pay a bundled price and not use all the amenities. Nor do I think the flight attendants should be roaming the aisle hocking headphones, blankets and pillow.

With the miniaturizations of technology ie IPods and MP3 players entertainment is a snap. I can watch my own movies, listen to my own music for free, and not have to pay for a headset. Simply pack my own lightweight blanket and an inflatable neck pillows and voila I am comfy. Eat a healthy high protein meal and drink plenty of water prior to my flight. Pack a piece of fruit or crackers in my purse to nibble on.

Airlines expect to make hundreds of millions of dollars next year from the $15 single bag fee alone. So far SouthWest Airline is the only one that isn’t charging this fee. They feel if they forgo the fee their passengers are more inclined to book with them again. This is true, there only true drawback is their limited fly zone. SouthWest SVP of marketing is saying however that they may begin charging fees in the future.

What’s your opinion? Would you rather pay a base fee then select your amenities? or Would you prefer everything remained bundled? Charging one price for all amenities, whether you use them or not.

  1. I don’t travel very often, but I would rather pay for what I want then get the bundle! Probably more than half is not used and is their gain!

I would want to pay only for what I use, anything that I don’t need will be a waste of money.
