Obama is President Elect! Obama is President Elect? Obama IS President Elect.
No matter how you chose to say it the fact remains history was made last night. Our nation, our people, our parties are taking a triumphant step towards a better day.
I couldn’t help but drive into the office today with a cheerful smile, a joy in my heart and a song in my voice. My normal stop for breakfast was made extra special as a older Caucasian man quickened his step to open the door to the cafe for me, gave me a wink and for some reason he felt the need to congratulate me. I suppose I had a little something to do with this victory but, I was hardly the pivotal vote. Once inside the cafe I was serenaded by an African American man fixing his coffee at the counter as he was whistling a cheerful tune. Finally, there will be a leveling of the playing field. All people will begin to be seen and viewed as being created equal. America shall overcome.
While minding my own business and removing a paper jam from the company copier I was swarmed with hugs and cheers of jubilation from coworkers. They were weeping and laughing all in the same breathe. The realization that middle America, the working class families finally have a voice was an overwhelming emotional thread. My coworkers are a rainbow of people all of whom this morning have a sense of relief on their faces.
I have witnessed a few presidents voted into office. The one that stands out was Clinton of course. He too brought an awesome spirit of hope and prosperity. At the time he was in office I was able to raise my son on my single income, I feel a sense of relief for the single parent families that will benefit from this new Democratic reign. It was an emotional day when Clinton was voted in and even more emotional when he was ushered out.
This for me is not a black or white thing, it’s a can I pay my bills thing. It’s a will I have money left for my retirement thing. It’s a will my son be able to finish out his military tours and come home from the war sooner thing.
Change is truly in the air and we can chose to embrace it or retreat in denial. I choose to take this opportunity to embark on this journey and revel in the Obama Affect.

To be honest, I wasn’t thrilled with either candidate by the end of the campaigning. But that happens to me all the time and has nothing to do personally with either candidate. I just get so tired of mudslinging and detracting from issues. I’m glad it is over and I do hope for the best. I also will keep President Obama in my thoughts and prayers so that he can hopefully bring some relief to this country.
We need it.

I agree with teeni, I wasn’t thrilled by either candidate. I feel like it really doesn’t matter what they say they are going to do before they get in office, its what they do once they get there. So for me, well, I have a wait and see attitude. But congrats! I know you are loving it.

I am loving it because I feel the best candidate won, and I agree we will have to wait and see. Obama strikes me as a man of his word and I believe that he knows we will hold him accountable and will call him out if he make the slightest move towards letting us down.

I voted for McCain. I don’t think he’s the perfect candidate for this time, but for the long run (ie. 4 years) I think he’s the better choice. However, Obama has promise to become a capable leader, and as my duty, I will now offer my loyalty and support for our next Commander-in-Chief!

He’s the right man at the right time. As I listened to his speech last night, I sat in my comfy chair and cried tears of joy. I went to bed after his speech and turned on my radio. KOMO 1000 was reporting a traffic jam at 4th and Pike, because people were marching down the street, making a joyful noise that all could hear.
Colleagues reported getting very little sleep last night, as neighborhoods all over Seattle erupted with joy.
It was a great night for our country!

Our President-Elect is an affirmation that hard work, honesty and commitment do get you somewhere in this world. I was really starting to wonder about that.
We are a global society now and his election affirms that reality. It is are charge to harness all of the opportunities before us and create opportunities for the youth that is coming up under us so that this country can maintain a first world status. First world status is not guaranteed or promised, we became a first world on the backs of slaves and poor immigrants often minors, who worked the industry of this country during its early years as the United States of America. With all of our high-priced educations we have got to get a grasp of the industry (industries) that will carry us through this century into the next without resort to the abuse, misuse of the poor and down-trodden. God Bless America!

Hi Deborah – I loved the video you sent me election day morning… I laughed so much when I saw it. I am happy to see Bush out- I think he damaged our credibility as a nation- but I don’t think all the economic problems are his. I think Obama will have valuable NEW insight that we really really need.
My only concern is that the media portrays him as very very liberal and extreme on abortion. Normally the Democrats stand on abortion does not alarm me- but there have some things that have been said about him backing certain procedures that I find abhorrent and his vote of present in the Illinois senate on issues of this matter. I never used to think too much about abortion or choice, but recently someone whom I value their opinion very greatly said – “People ask me how I can vote based on one issue? Abortion? Well these little ones have no voice, and the Bible says speak up for those who have no voice.”
I suddenly had a turn of 180 degrees in my heart and really did not feel that my vote should be all about myself. I don’t know what is in Obama heart regarding these small persons- what the media says is one thing and often not so. All I can do is pray that he makes just decisions and considers the plight of children.
As far as everything else about Obama I like him a lot- I think he will be a breath of fresh air. I don’t plan on commenting anymore on politics – it’s all a very personal matter to me…

Yes!! when I read, in his own words, his administration would require, like slaves, to serve 100 hours each year of community service in college – and 50 hours each year in high school, I almost cried. Change I can believe in!! And when he referred to the constitution flawed, and as a document of negative liberties, and that it needed to be an agent of redistributive change, why I almost fainted. Or about using the power of government to silence your most vocal critics? I was like, “YEAH MAN! Suppress our freedom of speech! I love it!” And that the Warren commission was not radical *enough* and should have gone further to use the courts to require redistributive change! I couldn’t believe that some one agreed with me on the abolition of the separation of powers of the judicial and legislatve branches of government! I LOVE HIM!!
Not.

Thank you so much for sharing your opinion and thoughts. Your comment reaffirms the importance of a democracy and that all people must have a voice. I am so proud of this country, proud that a fair and even exchange of thoughts and ideas can take place without a tinge of bitterness.
He may not stand for or support all or any of your needs as an individual however he has been elected to serve the needs of the people by the people. So at this time the Republicans will have to learn to “make do” as we Democrats have had to do for the last eight years. Perhaps one day the Republicans will reign again. Until then…..glad you “Love Him!”

All my needs as an individual? Just my basic rights please.
One word: FREEDOM.
The fundamentals of the Democracy of which you speak are further guaranteed by the separation of powers. By the right not to be conscripted into slavery by the state. The freedom to not be conscripted into civil service AGAINST ONE’S WILL. Darn right I’m embittered when it comes the systematic elimination of my liberties by a man who says he will do it, and a generation of Americans willing to trade their natural rights for socialistic ideology.
Your first right in a Democratic republic is to not be compelled to do that which is antithetical to your natural rights.
And these are not simply bout MY individual liberties, as important as those liberties are. But the guarantee, under the Constitution – Which the President swears he will uphold and defend – of every American in the Country.
And it’s interesting that you simply resorted to making this a Republican / Democrat argument. Which, for me it is not. This is about something much greater to me than ideology. It is the essentials of human rights and freedoms, not because “my guy” is or isn’t in the office.
All of which has no bearing on our friendship.
But, I also embrace, as is my right, my duty to dissent.
So, off of my soap box, and let me ask a question. How DO you feel about your constitutional freedoms. Are they important to you?

Your soap box indeed! It is difficult to let go of the status quo for many. Although it may be interpreted by some that President Elect will take away any freedoms or liberties we may have or feel entitled to he is Constitutionally unable to. I respect his exuberant energy and if he misspeaks in the first days, weeks or months of his presidency then I will continue to be supportive. How many among us don’t wobble as we step into a new position in our lives. He will and is surrounding himself with a very strong cabinet who will advise him as all have all previous presidents. The checks an balance will remain in place.

Obama was larger than life when he won. Philippines is among those who watched the election, and we were glad when he was pronounced the winner. This may not be a direct effect on us,but knowing that freedom still lives in America is enough to be satisfied.
This is very important so the administration can get more solid support from its constituents.
Thanks!

I am more than happy with the results. I know that everyone has their own reasons and life priorities for voting for one candidate over the other. I normally don’t have time to research every word, every vote that each candidate did to get where they are.
I’m a more simpleton. I see what I see. When I look at Obama, I see someone presidential. Yes, he said all the things I wanted to hear and he said it in a way that I could understand. He wasn’t bouncing all over the place. He was clear even though he competitors said they were not totally true. It goes for both sides.
Most of all I see hope, change, and unity in Obama. What he did years ago is the past. I want someone who is going to represent our future.

I think I agree with almost none of the Obama ideals … especially in the economics side of politics. His first pick for White House staff was a power banker that held a seat on the board of Freddie Mac, and PUSHED Fanny and Freddie during the Clinton administration where this big mess started. Massive lobby money, massive corruption, massive economic failure. The housing crisis has devestated the entire world economy. tsk tsk…. big government. End of my political comment.
” I am very happy to have an African American as president, and would love to see a female President someday as well. So “in that fact” I think we have made an important step in out country. “

I’ve been for Obama for president since 2004, though I didn’t expect to see it this soon, if ever. When others were questioning his lack of experience, I was marveling at how systematic and controlled his campaign was — there were very few gaffes, no leaks, and no going off message by anyone in the campaign. There were virtually no loose cannons. McCain had it right when he said that Obama was working on the transition, but it was in ways that were a lot more substantive than “measuring for the drapes.”So far as the requirement for community service:

Well said Mike…We as a culture are wrapped so tightly in the “keep up with the Jones’” mentality that we have lost sight of what is important. The community, the Jones’ have what they have because they embrace and help the community. They are the ones backing fundraisers and creating jobs and giving back to the communities from which they came. In some ways community service should be a requirement just as taxes, obtaining a driver’s license registering a vehicle etc are. At years end every American rich or poor should be able to account for some kind of community service hours. It should not be considered just a criminals’ punishment

My point on community service was to rebut an earlier comment that said that it would be “required,” and would be like being a slave. Barack’s statement, “There’s no community service requirement in the real world; no one forcing you to care,” shows, to me that there will be no such requirement.
I personally think that community service should be completely voluntary and there should be no requirement to account for community service hours, except to document hours for any possible tax benefits. I do think that it should be strongly encouraged, but that there should be no stigma or penalties associated with it one way or the other. There are lot of people whose lives are stretched too thin now without mandatory community service.
