America’s Veterans Answered The Call

November 10, 2008 by: Debo Hobo

myveteranson.jpg Veterans Day a day to pay tribute to those that have fought for the freedoms we enjoy today. I took this picture of my son on board his ship, a destroyer in the US Navy. It’s a few years old just after his first deployment return to Hawaii, at which time the families of the sailors, myself included set sail on a Tiger Cruise back to San Diego. At this point in time he was the Master Helmsman, the driver of the ship.

My regular readers know how much I gush over this young man every chance I get, he makes a momma proud. I made a quick video of him explaining what he does in his own nonchalant way. This video was filmed after he arrived back in San Diego last month, after doing off shore exercises 24 hours before his wedding. It was a good possibility that he may have had to miss his big day due to inclement weather, but luckily they were able to chopper him in 4 hours before the rehearsal dinner. Phew!!!!

An excerpt from A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

We pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of the men and women who in defense of our freedom have bravely worn the uniform of the United States.

America’s veterans answered the call when asked to protect our Nation from some of the most brutal and ruthless tyrants, terrorists, and militaries the world has ever known. They stood tall in the face of grave danger and enabled our Nation to become the greatest force for freedom in human history. Members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard have answered a high calling to serve and have helped secure America at every turn.

Our country is forever indebted to our veterans for their quiet courage and exemplary service. We also remember and honor those who laid down their lives in freedom’s defense. These brave men and women made the ultimate sacrifice for our benefit. On Veterans Day, we remember these heroes for their valor, their loyalty, and their dedication. Their selfless sacrifices continue to inspire us today as we work to advance peace and extend freedom around the world.

  2. Most people have no idea of the sacrifices our veterans make. My nephew wasn’t able to get home from his ship in time to bury his mother. I didn’t think that was possible but it was. Time spent away from their families on a continuous basis. They miss a lot of their own family to protect ours. We are forever indebted for lots of reasons.

This is a big part of what many don’t see on the news. Family sacrifice is way bigger than it appears. I’ve witnessed many occasions where a friend was distraught over his wife’s illness, a newborn baby back home was having serious health problems, a parent dying, a frustrated partner deciding to leave the marriage. It’s sad to watch people go through something like that when you’re a few thousand miles and a few months from home. Giving their lives is the ultimate sacrifice, but there’s a whole host of other ones behind that.

I’m proud to have served and I always remember those who came before – and after – me. Know that your son is doing something that has a far bigger impact than he probably realizes. Nice photo, I know that environment well.

BTW, what ship is he on? Tiger cruises on an aircraft carrier are miserable for the families. It takes so long to go in and out of port that everyone is incredibly cranky by the time they’re allowed to leave. It’s a real-live day in the life… :)

Hi Pete, the thing is he could have been done this past August, but opted to extend out for another year (GI Bill Increase etc). He had received some advise from a former Marine that he had better make darn sure he is ready to get out because leaving too early would haunt him for years to come. He and his new wife were bless when he was able to chopper in because they didn’t have to do that luckily there was an inward bound flight. My poor daughter-in-law was distraught and was starting to feel jilted and her parents were looking to me to do something. It’s the military they run on their own time not civilian time is all I could tell them.

Thank you for serving, Navy? Marines?

When he left home he was the kid I had to tell repeatedly to “take the damn trash out” and when now when I do get to see him, he has grown into such a self reliant man. Whoops I’m gushing again, sorry!

The Tiger Cruise was fun, boring, exciting, scary and ended too soon. The food was not the best “they brought out the good stuff for y’all mom” Oh my!
He is on the USS Millius DDG69 we felt every wave as the ship pitched from side to side. I help chip and paint and we ran combat station drills together. It really was loads of fun.

  3. A couple of quotes that might be worthy of this post …

It is easy to take liberty for granted, when you have never had it taken from you.

This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.

I am in debt to all that have served, and to those who serve yet today. Your son is a good man, and this is a post and tribute I found very fitting.

    Well done Debo

Thanks Eric, I never thought my child would grow up to voluntarily put himself in harms way everyday for the sake of other. But as you can imagine I am extremely proud and indebted to him…everyday I pray for him and his comrades.

It’s a great honor to have someone you know in the military, much less your son. I definitely support our troops, serving and served. They made a great sacrifice to protect our country. I will always be grateful for that.

  11. We have a similar occasion in the UK when ‘we remember’ all those that have fallen during armed conflict.
The emblem used is the red poppy famous for it’s appearance in French fields in 1915 after thy had been heavily shelled by the germans.

    Lest we forget…..
