Quick List of Safety Tips to Avoid Cyberstalking

November 29, 2008 by: Debo Hobo

I’m just going to put this video out there. I’m not going to point any fingers or name any names. All one would have to do is follow Twitter and read some of the 140 character comments that float around out there.

Although I personally don’t have any cyberspace stalkers (ummm do I?) it is clear that some Twitterers do. The 400 plus followers that DeboHobo has on Twitter are fun, informative, positive and respectful for the most part. No complaints here.

But, I read some of the comments left for other Twitterers and it is almost creepy. So, if you suspect you are embarking on a questionable online relationship, STOP and think about what you are doing.

This video says it all.

What is a quick list of safety tips to avoid cyberstalking/harassment?

* Don’t respond to flaming (provocation online)
* Choose a genderless screen name
* Don’t flirt online, unless you’re prepared for the consequences. This is just like real life. Yes, you have the right to flirt. And you have the right to a sexy nickname. But the more obvious you are, the more likely you are to arouse unwanted attention from unwanted suitors.
* Save offending messages and report them to your service provider
* If someone makes threats in a chat room or on a message board, notify the moderator or Web site operator right away
* Don’t confront the stalker/harasser, this only arouses more anger or emotional attacks
* Don’t give out any personal information about yourself or anyone else
* Get out of a situation online that has become hostile, log off or surf elsewhere
* Google yourself to make sure no personal information is posted by others about you

What are your thoughts? Please share them in the comment section.

  2. I don’t use twitter much and frankly lately I don’t engage in commenting too much on blogs. My online life just seems a lot more interesting… with the kids and the holidays and all. I am comfortable just reading the handful of blogs I like and that’s it. I don’t really look for a huge social network online.

I like how the video was called video jug… I feel like Beavis just saying that. “he eh he… she said video jugs…”

  3. I was actually thinking about using that “last blog post” widget for my commenters (give them a post shout out) but it does not seem to work well- it keeps showing a blog post I wrote about a week ago and I posted since. Now I am not so sure and what is the heart at the bottom for???

The plug in is called CommentLuv so they (the creators) attached the heart to it. Kind of kooky I know but that’s their logo.

  4. I have felt uncomfortable on occasion and I just don’t respond which is easy to do on Twitter anyway. I just close the browser…

  7. Some good tips! However, I do like to flirt a tad online with one or two that are cool with it. But nothing major. Besides, I don’t give out personal info.

  8. I think that the difference lies in the media. I have no interest in just aimlessly chatting with “somebody” I do not know on Twitter. I like Twitter to publish mini posts to my blog, and see what other BLOGGERS I like are doing / talking about. That’s where it ends for me.
When I see someone following me that follows far more than they have friends, I block them. Simple.

You are such a wealth of knowledge and you point out good logic for using Twitter, I unfollow folks that I see have more followers than they are themselves following ie John Chow, not that he is a cyberstalker or anything.

Choosing a genderless screen name is i think best and working trick to avoid cyberstalking, bcoz boys always used to attract towards females.

Debo Hobo, I can’t understand that twitter thing either and why anybody would shout out in the world what they are doing and where.

I had lunch with John Chow and his dotcom pho’s and they were just all getting twittered by their followers. I asked if they were worried that people might end up stalking them. And I just got the “deer in front of headlights” look.

    I guess it’s fun for some :)

Diva you know we are all HATEN’ on you right now! How did you get to go to a ‘dot com pho’ with JC….?

I used Twitter, but I don’t think anyone is really ‘listening’ to anyone else. It like a million different small conversations going on. If it actually had audio it would sound like Charlie Brown’s teacher. MWAH..MWAH…MWAH..MWAH….
